The neighboring towns of Templeton are Royalston and Winchendon on the north, Hubbardston on the southeast, Phillipston on the west and Gardner on the east. Royalston is about 12 miles, Winchendon 21 miles, Hubbardston 7 miles, and Phillipston and Gardner about 4 miles from Templeton.
Royalston is a small town with about 1,200 inhabitants although it covers about 42.6 square miles. As well as Templeton, Royalston has well-preserved historic district in center which is of great historical and architectural value. With its waterfalls, Tully Lake and several forest and wildlife management areas the town has became popular destination for tourists and recreation.
Winchendon nicknamed Toy Town for its toy manufacturing from the mid-19th to early 20th century is a small town with about 10,000 inhabitants. Worth visiting is the Murdock-Whitney House Museum which had been home to Winchendon one of most successful and longest standing families, the Murdock-Whitney family for five generations.
Hubbardston is a small town with about 4,000 inhabitants. The town is probably best known for sympathizing with Shays' Rebellion, an armed uprising of small farmers in Central and Western Massachusetts from 1786 to 1787, while one of the leading rebels, Captain Adam Wheeler was from Hubbardston.
Phillipston is located west of Templeton and is a home to about 1,600 people. Phillipston Town Center contains many well-preserved 18th century structures and was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1999.
